Howard Kaplan at the American Bar Association sent me a note this week regarding the ABA's 2008 Silver Gavel Awards. This year, the Awards include a Commentary category which will consider weblogs among other forms of opinion journalism.
If interested, the following information overviews the Awards and entry submission cost and process:
The American Bar Association's 2008 Silver Gavel Awards recognize outstanding efforts to foster the American public’s understanding of law, legal institutions, and the role of law in government, society and culture.
We invite entrants to this year’s 51st annual awards competition for media and the arts. This year, we have made some significant revisions, incorporating online components into existing media categories and now presenting awards in these nine categories: Books, Magazines, Newspapers, Commentary, Drama and Literature, Documentaries, Television News, Radio, and Websites.
The new Commentary category is “open to commentary, editorials, columns, criticism, editorial cartoons, blogs, and other opinion journalism, regardless of medium of production or dissemination.”
Entries must have been originally published, produced, or presented in 2007. The entry fee is $75, except for Television News, which is $125. Entries must be received by Tuesday, January 8, 2008.
To enter, go online to www.abanet.org/publiced/gavel, where you will find the complete 2008 entry guidelines, a downloadable entry form, and a listing of all winners. If you have questions, please contact Howard Kaplan at 312.988.5738 or howardkaplan@staff.abanet.org.
