In keeping with the theme of "outside the practice" posts on Saturday, I have been thinking recently about all of the lawyers I have met who no longer practice but instead are teaching school, writing books, selling real estate, at home raising their children and myriad other pursuits and careers.
In turn this made me think of a book I read a few years back, Po Bronson's What Should I Do With My Life? As you might surmise, it was a book that explored just that question, through the eyes and actions of a variety of people in all stages of life and career. It was an worthwhile read, and I seem to recall that it even included a lawyer who decided to become a priest.
In any case, I thought I would take a moment today and check back in with Po Bronson, just to see what's new.
It turns out that beyond continuing to write books and articles, Mr. Bronson is also a blogger. And, he has a partner on his Social Studies blog by the name of Ashley Merriman who happens to be a lawyer, as well as a writer and playwright.
As you might expect, in writing about the age old question, Mr. Bronson apparently gets lots of email and inquiries about what people should do with their lives:
Many people have come to me for further assistance with tackling this question in their life. Unfortunately, I don't do consultations
So I include here some speeches, books, courses, and websites that might help. These have been suggested by readers. (Feel free to suggest more, or anything that's helped you).
I checked out this Resources page and it has lots of interesting information. Indeed, the Po Bronson .com website itself is full of links, information and ideas. In sum, whether you are thinking about a new career, looking for a new book to read, or simply enjoy reading exploring the ideas and viewpoints of others who have spent time pondering life's great questions, you might consider clicking any of the links above for some exploration of your own.
