Blawg's Sunday Paper, 12 - 10 - 06

The Sunday Paper, a quick spin through blawgosphere and the week that was.

Brett Trout, the Iowa patent attorney behind Blawg IT, offered a chart to assist people in answering the question, Is it in the Public Domain?  The post was spurred by some copyright news from the United Kingdom: "English rockers who have apparently not died before they got old are up in arms over the British government’s refusal this week to extend British copyright protection beyond the current 50 year term. Unlike the United States government, which never met a copyright extension act it did not like, the British government feels a 50 year limit, the same as most European countries, is necessary to allow its citizens some public domain benefit before the next Ice Age."

Ron Friedmann at Prism Legal Consulting asked: "Knowledge management typically focuses on capturing and re-using a firm’s own work product. What if you could just as easily tap other firm’s work?"  Integrating Competing Law Firm Work Product into KM

Carolyn Elefant, who has penned quality posts at My Shingle for years, offered another interesing one, Bill Less and Prosper!  In the post, she pointed out associate billing rate information recently availabel at Law.com and then made some suggestions as to how smaller firms and/or solos could utilize the information to set their own rates.

Ross Kodner at Ross Ipsa Loquitur said Practice Groups are Dead! Love Live Client Teams!, and then wondered, "what are the relative advantages and disadvantages of the 'Practice Group Approach' v. the 'Client Team Approach?'”  As part of his analysis, he looked at the advantages and disadvantages of the Practice Group model.

Professor Bainbridge on Wine, which I highlighted yesterday [Lawyers and Wine], has a great recipe for Rack of Venison Stuffed with Sausage and Apples; Porcini and Truffle Sauce; Truffle Risotto.   If you are whiz around the kitchen, perhaps you might file this away for future reference.

Scott Vine's Information Overload, an "Information Management and Librarian Blog with a communications media and technology law slant,"  reported on developments in three interesting telco/media cases in Europe -- Three Telco / Media cases from this week

Jason the Content Librarian [Jason Eiseman] pointed to a report at MicrosoftWatch suggesting that Microsoft is involved with a "new RSS reader that allows you to see your RSS feeds in a 3D visual presentation. The application, called UniveRSS, is specifically designed for Windows Vista."  Read RSS in 3D here.

And, finally, in the spirit of the season, Sun Microsystem's General Counsel Mike Dillon discussed Planting seeds during the holidays:  "Like many parents, my wife and I feel conflicted during the holidays. On the one hand, we experience warm nostalgic enjoyment as we watch the children rip into their presents. But, at the same time, we feel a need for them to understand the value of giving to others."    As part of teaching his children about giving, this year, he and his wife tried a novel idea with his children, microlending.   "[T]his year, we gave each child money to loan through an MFI [Micro financing institution]."  Which, in turn, allowed his children to give small amounts to wide range of people.   Interesting concept, interesting post.

Enjoy Your Sunday...
