Funny how a thing you never heard of suddenly shows up multiple times in a single day...courtesy of the blawgosphere. For me, today, it is SecondLife.
Info/Law and PrawfsBlawg suggest that Judge Richard Posner [see also The Becker-Posner Blog] is going to make an appearance in Second Life.
According to reports, Judge Richard A. Posner of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit will take on avatar form, to discuss the US Constitution in the era of apocalyptic terrorism. [from New World Notes]
What is Second Life? Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 1,678,096 people from around the globe. [from SecondLife.com ]
Hmmm. Well, next thing I know I am checking in with entrepreneur Howard Lindzon, who in his post Toyota on Wallstrip, pointed out that the The Lefsetz Letter, lawyer/music business consultant Bob Lefsetz's twenty-year running newsletter, now blog, discussed Toyota's marketing of the Scion brand. Included in this post, Lefsetz noted that to stay edgy, Scion was advertising on SecondLife instead of MySpace:
And MySpace? They’re abandoning it for secondlife.com. Yes, the media boys might think Websites are forever, but the truly big boys know the elite move on, and the masses eventually follow them. To sites like secondlife.com. Where Scion plays now. Aligning the brand with the cutting edge.
So, a website so edgy it makes MySpace seem old school. So cutting edge, that Scion seeks it out for advertising. And, given that I first heard about the site literally today, Judge Posner knows more about it than I do. Not only that, it appears he will be offering a virtual lecture in a virtual lecture hall. Can't say Judge Posner does not try to keep up with the times.
p.s. You just have to check out his avatar.
Good stuff.
