Feedburner posted a great analysis of Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds on its weblog a couple of weeks ago. Feedburner, which, as its name suggests, is a company focused on feeds. In fact, if you haven't checked the service out recently, I highly recommend you do so now. The company is pushing the envelope in offering myriad new services along with its flagship feed optimization service. One new service I found interesting is its simple mechanism for embedding Amazon advertising into RSS feed entries (but that is a story for another day).
Back to the RSS analysis, here are some of the highlights:
- The RSS reader market continues its expansion. There are now at least 719 different feed readers consuming RSS feeds from the blogosphere.
- Mobile RSS readers are growing steadily in popularity.
- Enclosure technologies which allow for multimedia clips to be attached to RSS feeds (e.g., podcasting) continue to grow in usage and popularity
Beyond these highlights, there is a lot more in the FeedBurner analysis, so for anyone interested in this subject, feel free to stop by the site and
read the rest. It certainly offers a positive outlook for the future of weblogs, blawgs and the technologies developing around them.
