Deviating from subject matter at hand, I wanted to mention the
Baghdad Bulletin. A fledging "free" press paper in post-war Iraq, the Bulletin came about because a couple of 20-somethings (one from the USA and one from Great Britain) basically decided to move to Iraq and try and get an English-language Iraqi newsmagazine off of the ground.
The Bulletin has a staff of 11 people, both Iraqi and foreign, who make on average $50 a week. It has only published a few issues thus far, but is serving as a conduit for a variety of Iraqi and foreign officials to publish columns and stories on items of interest to Iraq and the world.
I listened to Mitch Albom interview one of the founders, David Enders, 22, of Grand Rapids, Michigan last night and came away impressed. At the very least, Enders simply seems to be trying to make a positive difference. Good luck to the Baghdad Bulletin...
