I read with interest an article in this month's
Law Technology News about an e-Learning company called
Inseyet. According to the article, this company literally was born of the intellectual capital gathered and maintained by the health care practice group within
Robinson Cole. In a nutshell, the attorneys took all of their HIPAA compliance knowledge and packaged it into a branded product.
This "firm-to-LLC" concept is not new, but recently I seem to be running into more examples of it in the marketplace. The idea is not as far-fetched as some may think. There is a huge volume of expert institutional knowledge buried within the typical law firms. And, this knowledge has value beyond the billable hour. As the legal sector wakes up to this reality (and finds new and efficient methods to package and distribute the knowledge), I expect to see a variety of offshoots and products which leverage law and technology to provide more services and possibly new revenue streams.
